Light, airy and a little bit arty. Katy's kitchen serves original food and exceptional coffee, and if you'd like to stay a while, there's pottery to paint at your table.
Light, airy and full of art
The floors are painted yellow and red, the walls are white, green and mustard, and leaves hang from the ceiling beams. On every wall are paintings by Katy's father, the artist Mike Wald, in handmade frames. On each table you'll find one of Katy's little flowers, made from sea shells she gathers herself on the beach, then decoupages and glazes.
Something to take home
Tucked into the cafe is Katy's little shop, with jewellery, gifts and little knick-knacks to browse while you wait for your coffee. You'll also find her shell pieces here: shells she gathers on the beach and paints or decoupages by hand. Perfect for a present, or a treat for yourself.

Katy, a chef and an artist
Katy cooks and paints, and the Mustard Seed is where the two meet. She created the menu, and the pottery studio is her invitation to everyone else to make something too.
Art runs in the family: her father is the artist Mike Wald, and his paintings hang throughout the cafe. She opened the Mustard Seed in Yzerfontein with her husband, Gary.
Out of the kitchen, Katy is a professional “frolicologist”, spending as much time as possible in, around or on the sea, frolicking with the little creatures who live there.
Josh & Angie
The cafe is a family affair. Katy and Gary's son Josh is our chef, and their daughter Angie is our barista, so your breakfast and your flat white are both made by family.
Outside the kitchen and away from the coffee machine, they're both musicians. Josh is a multi-talented drummer who also plays piano and writes music, and Angie is a singer, sometimes on guitar, with a voice like an angel. They're both members of the band Coffee & Chlorine, where Josh is the drummer and songwriter and Angie is the singer. Both are well known to the locals, and a joy to have around. You never know when they'll be performing live at the cafe, and it's something you definitely don't want to miss.

From bare clay to your kitchen shelf
Katy believes anyone can paint, and she proves it every day, even to the most adamant “I can’t draw” customers, usually within moments. Paints, brushes, stencils, aprons and her gentle guidance are all included. Booking ahead is a good idea for groups.

- Paint at your tableUnderglaze colours go on soft and come out bright. Take as long as you like.
- We glaze and fire itWe coat your piece in a clear, food-safe glaze and fire it in our kiln.
- Collect itGlazing and firing usually take 3 to 4 weeks, sometimes less. We'll send you a WhatsApp when your piece is ready to collect.

Faith as small as a mustard seed
“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Matthew 17:20
Our name comes from the Bible. Jesus used the mustard seed, one of the smallest seeds of all, to show that even a little faith can move mountains. In the parable, that tiny seed grows into a plant big enough for the birds to nest in its branches (Matthew 13:31–32). That's the spirit of this place: a small start, planted in faith, growing into somewhere everyone is welcome to rest a while.
